There have been tonnes of crowdfunding campaigns around drones, some very impressive, some not-so-bad, and some that you probably shouldn’t waste time on. The Micro Drone 3.0 comes from a team of experts who’ve worked with drones in the past, and with reasonable success. But, with the way drone technology is progressing around the world (China, especially), will the newest installment of the crowdfunded Micro Drone take off?
It is hard to say. For perhaps the first time, the price : features ratio on a crowdfunded drone campaign looks impressive. To get to the raw features, here’s what the Micro Drone 3.0 comes with: a Walkera Ladybird-esque canopy (and footprint), a swappable battery, FPV via WiFi (to your smartphone — more on this later), and of course a camera. Makers of Micro Drone 3.0 claim that the drone is the world’s smallest one to have a full-fledged mechanical gimbal!
As an early bird offer, the makers are also offering a DODOcase VR headset with the Micro Drone 3.0. You can install your phone into the case and enjoy FPV flights with the drone; or that’s the idea. The camera on the drone streams video at 1280 x 720p/30fps — not bad at all. Oh, and the drone can also be controlled via your smartphone — not the most precise way to control a drone, but why not?
There’s no real mention of the battery size the Micro Drone 3.0 will have as yet, but I’m suspecting it’ll be somewhere in the 500-650mAh range at best.
The makers also claim to have used a modular design for the Micro Drone 3.0, which will allow buyers to add or remove features via ‘expansion packs’. Think Project Ara, if you’re a smartphone guy.
The drone will have a Parrot Bebop-ish prop guard around it, which should be a welcome and much needed addition — after all, this will mostly be something budding drone pilots would want to invest in.
In a nutshell, it’d be fair to say that the Micro Drone 3.0 is an impressive offering for the asking price of $125 (as of writing this article). The pricing is set to increase (next hop: $150), however.
