Top 5 GoPro alternatives for your drone

Want to try your hand at aerial filming/adventure filming, but don't want to risk a lot of money while at it? Here's a list of the top 5 GoPro action camera alternatives that you should consider!

With electronics manufacturing costs falling each day, it is now possible to get proper gadgets at prices you couldn’t have imagined a year back. This applies to almost every field, be it smartphones, tablets, cameras, or even drones.

What’s also a major contributing factor besides falling component parts is the competition; never before has any market seen the competition it is seeing now.

Left to right: Blackview Hero 1, Xiaomi Yi and SJCAM SJ4000

In this article, I’ll be telling you about the top 5 GoPro alternatives there are. Naturally, all of these cost not just lesser than the corresponding GoPro, but in fact they’re a fraction of the cost in most places.

I’ve also done the research and listed the top placed you can buy these action cameras from, so lets get at it — here are the top 5 GoPro alternatives for your drone!

Top 5 GoPro Alternatives

1. SJCAM SJ4000

This one’s a classic. The SJCAM SJ4000 is perhaps the best GoPro alternative around. It isn’t just extremely affordable at around $100 (with all the bells and whistles, i.e., accessories), but it is also probably the most popular GoPro alternative around with tonnes of reviews and hacks on the internet.

There’s also a non-WiFi version of the SJ4000 available, but you probably shouldn’t bother about that since there’s not a big difference in price between the WiFi and non-WiFi versions.

  • Lens: 170°
  • Camera modes: 1080p/30fps, 720p/60fps, 720p/30fps, 480p/60fps, 480p/30fps
  • Battery: 900mAh
  • Display: 1.5-inch 960 x 240p
  • WiFi: Yes

The unique selling point of the SJCAM SJ4000 is that it comes with all accessories (trust me there’s a lot!) in the box. Additionally, there’s also a screen on this one.

The SJCAM SJ4000 WiFi action cam be bought for around $100 shipped.

2. Xiaomi Yi

Xiaomi Yi

  • Lens: 155°
  • Camera modes: 1080p/(60, 48, 30 and 24 fps), 960p/(60fps or 48fps), 720p/(120, 60, 48fps), 480p/(240fps)
  • Battery: 1010mAh
  • Display: N/A
  • WiFi: Yes

If there’s any action camera that the SJCAM makers would hate to the core, it would be the Xiaomi Yi. And the reason’s obvious — Xiaomi’s Yi action camera has managed to steal the thunder of every other action camera on the planet… including GoPro in many cases.

Xiaomi is now a well-known name in the smartphone market, and the Yi is its first action camera offering. It is a little expensive when compared to the SJ4000, given that accessories need to be bought separately. But if you can manage the extra cash, this one’s the way to go!

The Xiaomi Yi can be yours for $67 shipped worldwide.

3. Blackview Hero 1

Blackview Hero 1

  • Lens: 170°
  • Camera modes: 2304 x 1296p/30fps, 1920 x 1080p/60fps, 1920 x 1080p/30fps, 1280 x 720p/60fps, 1280 x 720p/30fps
  • Battery: 1050mAh
  • Display: 2-inch, 960 x 240p
  • WiFi: Yes

It’s strange how Blackview continue making the Hero 1 (and Hero 2 for that matter) despite the obvious nomenclature rip off! Nonetheless, the Blackview Hero 1 is actually a decent offering when you take into mind the price-to-value ratio.

Like the SJCAM SJ4000, the Blackview Hero 1 too comes with a full set of accessories, which means you need to waste no time (and money) before you get going with your adventure trails and aerial footage!

It does feature higher resolution video recording than the SJ4000 though, and can be bought for $139.

4. SJCAM SJ4000 Plus

SJCAM SJ4000 Plus

  • Lens: 170°
  • Camera modes: 2560 x 1440p/30fps, 1920 x 1080p/60fps, 1920 x 1080p/30fps, 1280 x 720p/120fps
  • Battery: 900mAh
  • Display: 1.5-inch, 960 x 240p
  • WiFi: Yes

Yet another SJCAM in here. As you may have already noted, the only difference between this and the action camera on top of this list is the ‘plus’ in the end… but that does make a hell of a difference when you take into consideration that the SJCAM SJ4000+ does 2K video (2560 x 1440p/30fps).

Besides that, the SJ4000 Plus also features proper 1080p/60fps recording that lacks on the regular version of the SJ4000. Additionally, the SJ4000 Plus comes with WiFi as standard.

The SJ4000 Plus sells for $149 shipped.

5. Mobius 808 No.16

Mobius 808 No.16

  • Lens: 116°
  • Camera modes: 1920 x 1080p/30fps, 1280 x 720p/60fps,1280 x 720p/30fps
  • Battery: 250mAh
  • Display: N/A
  • WiFi: No

Quite an interesting name, isn’t it?

The Mobius 808 No.16 is very popular action camera, especially in the West. It comes with a very rugged design which makes it applicable for a lot of situations including drone FPV (yes, you can do FPV with this but you need an additional kit), dash cam for cars, etc.

The Mobius 808 No.16 is again, like the SJ4000 and Xiaomi Yi, plenty popular so you should get some considerable community support should you choose to go with the Mobius (on sale for $80).

These are what I think make the best GoPro alternatives. I do use the SJ4000 myself, but the new Blackview Hero 1 and of course the Xiaomi Yi do leave a great impression on me. The Mobius 808 No.16 is on the other hand, a tried and tested solution with a lovely form that would fit every quadcopter/hexacopter/multicopter drone.

Of course, there ought to be a tonne more GoPro alternatives that you know of. Mention the ones you’re using in the comments section below. Lets have a healthy discussion here!

“Mobius 808 No.16” is 2 different camera names. “Mobius action camera” is the one you reviewed. “808 #16” is the old version which is only 720p & 20 grams. Two very different cameras.
